My internship at AXA: How it changed my perceptions

My name’s Morgane and I’m currently studying at the European Business School (EBS) and working on my thesis on well-being at work and a new kind of management. For the past 3 months I’ve been an intern at AXA’s global head office in Paris. I’ve been part of the Global Attraction & Recruitment team, which sits within the HR department.

 

My main role has been to help out with the Global Graduate Program. I’ve been involved in performing benchmarks and responsible for collecting the names of all of AXA’s graduates during the preparation of documents for senior executives. I’ve been looking at ways to enhance the program for graduates. At AXA, they’re always searching for ways to improve the experience and I’m excited about what lies ahead for the future of the program.

 

I’ve also been involved in meetings which have focused on the global HR strategy. There is a real need to be able to connect the dots when working with such a big company and so many offices around the world. All this has changed my perceptions of HR and given me a better understanding of the challenges that HR teams face.

 

Many people assume that HR is just hiring and firing people, but there are so many other sides to it. Society is changing and all around the world we are starting to adapt our way of working. AXA is one of the world’s leading insurance companies, with offices all over the world. So it’s no wonder that they are constantly working on all the ways to transform their business for the better.

 

In terms of people and culture in particular, I was able to see first-hand the adjustments they’re making regarding ways of working. They’ve created a New World of Working Office in Belgium, everyone at AXA is invited to take part in the Start-In innovation program and soon the Global Graduate Program is about to open too.

 

This experience has really given me an opportunity to discover more about the human side of AXA and how they work to attract and retain talented people around the world. It’s helped me understand the role of HR within the complexity of a multi-business, multi-location company. Plus, my first language is French, so the fact that I had to speak in English part of the time has helped me develop my competency in the language. I had to concentrate more during meetings to understand the subject and that was a really rewarding challenge.

 

I would say over all, being an intern at AXA at 22 years old is a life lesson. You learn about yourself, and about others. You learn how you need to present yourself, respond to different situations and what it’s like working in a big company. It’s been a great experience.

 

I’m going back to school in September for my last year and I’m already looking for my “end-of-course internship.” My internship at AXA has cemented my interest in HR. So now I’m looking to continue in this field in Canada. Ideally, in Montréal!
